Motherhood is a wonderful thing. It is a privilege we need to be grateful for, a beautiful experience that we enjoy every second of it.
For some of us, it is the only thing we have right now in our life because our children are still too young and still need us to run around after them.
But if you constantly feel like there is something more to your life than cooking, doing the laundry, and take care of your children, you are not alone.
Many moms decided to go back to work, either full-time or part-time or start a business from home so that even though they are busy, they can still be close to their family and took care of them.
What if you don’t want to go back to work yet, or what if you think you need to have a certain skill first before you can start your own business and work from home?
What if you want to go back to college and continue your education? What if that is something you always want to do but did not think was possible, and therefore, you keep putting that dream on a pedestal?

If you do, you are not alone. Many moms thinking about going back to college or finishing a certified course in their field but hesitate to do it. It is completely normal because it will not be going to be a walk in a park.
First of all, when you are working, you will be away for a certain period of time, even have overtime, but once you are home, most likely you will not bring your work home with you. Or if you work from home, you will have the freedom to set your own pace and decide on your working hours.
Unfortunately, when you are a student, things will be a little bit trickier. After you are away to attend classes, or after you dedicated a couple of hours each day for your online classes, you will still need to work on your papers and assignments, even need to be away again to work on your group projects with your classmates.
Even so, don’t let those thoughts stop you from getting what you have always dreamed of. Because even though it will not easy, it will be paid off in the long run. You need to start enrolling in that college you have been dreaming of, or take that certified course in your field, or enroll in that specific online classes you’ve been eyeing for if you want to :
1. Gain More Confidence
Before you quit your job to become a full-time mom, you already boast a wealth of knowledge. Most likely you already have the academic education background and certain practical training needed in your field or industry.
However, you need to push the pause button for a while and start altering your focus to take care of your family. Nevertheless, you know very well you need to keep on learning. Especially when you want to make a come back to working in your field after leaving for a certain period.
Returning to school as a mature student, when we are an adult and a mom, will be a necessary step taken before you dive right back into the professional work. You need to hone your skill sets which might be a little bit rusty and increase your skills by acquiring new skills set.
New knowledge and skills could be required. Changes in many different aspects of your industry might happen rapidly from the days when you were still active in your field of work. Going back to school or taking a certified course first before you return to professional work after some time off, will give you the confidence and skills needed to keep up with the latest developments and stay ahead of the game.
2. Make an Investment for Better Future
Studies show that higher education provides you with more opportunities to be employed and have better career growth and financial benefits. It will also be going to be paid off in the long run as you are more likely to have access to a better health insurance plan, pension plan, and all.
Furthermore, more and more employers raising their education requirements, especially for the new hires. Across all job levels, in many countries, candidates are facing higher education requirements to qualify for the job.
For moms looking to make a comeback after spending a couple of years staying at home, the stakes are higher since they must compete with younger people. They need to prove themselves more, that they still have what it takes to compete and do the job despite having to split their focus to take care of their family.
Finishing school or completing a certain certified course in their field will prove to the future employer that they managed to do exactly that. Furthermore, higher education will not only increase a candidate’s chance of getting hired but also helps later when being considered for a promotion.
3. Change of Career Direction
You might be a working mom right now, but there’s something that feels off. Perhaps your job is super demanding and time-consuming. Maybe even soul-sucking since you don’t feel like this is the right career for you. Or perhaps you love your job, but you feel guilty about not spending more time with your family.
Maybe you are looking to have a job that doesn’t require you to go on a business trip often, or you want to quit your job altogether and start a business from home so that you can spend more time with your family without losing income and still feels like you achieve something in your life?
To do that, you need to look ahead to the kind of career you might be interested in, or the kind of business you want to set up. Then look for the education and courses you will need to get you there.

4. Personal Achievement
You have healthy and happy children. Your family is in a good financial situation where you don’t need to work and yet still able to have a comfortable life. Everything is working well, you have plenty of things to be grateful for.
And you are grateful for what you have, you really do. But somehow there’s something that still feels missing, and in your case, you yearn for that chance to continue your study which for one particular reason, you can’t finish.
If that is what you want, do it. Finish what you’ve started. Perhaps you had doubts before, it was not the right moment for you to pursue higher education. Perhaps you want to wait until your children get bigger first before you feel confident to divide your focus, or maybe before, you think it’s better for you to wait until you have a better financial situation before deciding to return to college to continue your study so that it won’t impact your family’s financial situation.
But if now your situation has changed and you have nothing holding you back, go for it. Pursue that lifelong dream that you have been put on the back burner for quite some time now. If you are still not sure whether or not it’s the right thing for you, you can choose an online class or a part-time course that will be shorter and less demanding, and time-consuming.
An online or a part-time course might just give you a little more focus in your life. More importantly, it will give you the important feeling of satisfaction that comes from achieving a challenging goal such as returning to pursue an education as an adult and a mom. With the rewards that come from completing the course of education itself.

5. Set an Example for your Children
I was 32 when I moved halfway across the globe, from Jakarta to Milan to pursue my dream of continuing my education, I brought along my husband and daughter with me. It might sound absurd because not only I chose to go back to college as a mature student, an adult, and a mom, but l also chose to do it abroad as an international student and brought my family with me in the process.
But to me, it felt like a natural thing to do, because I saw my mom doing it. Well, she wasn’t THAT crazy by bringing her little family moved to another continent as I did, but she returned to school at 42, and in the middle of finishing it, she was pregnant with my youngest sister (baby number 4).
I remembered waiting for her in the parking lot of her university to pick her up after classes, with my father, brother, and sister. She always looked tired but happy. It affected me unknowingly. I studied hard at school because I will be embarrassed if my mom got good grades and I didn’t.
I was also determined to have a higher education than my parents because if they can do it, there is no reason I couldn’t do the same thing. I hope history repeats itself, that my daughter will be inspired to keep continue with her education because she saw mommy went back to school.
By going back to college as a mom and mature student, you are setting an example for your children and making a positive impression on the ones that matter the most, and they will be proud of you, even more than you do of yourself.
